COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa City is giving a PIN grant that lets neighborhoods use tax dollars on projects such as installing benches or hosting DEI training—neighborhood groups can receive up to $3,000 for these efforts. The deadline to apply is March 24—awards will be announced in June.  KCRG
  • Roscoe (4-month-old Labrador retriever mix) is one of many pets available for adoption at AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport. The rescue works to match these animals with caring families (all are waiting for a new home).  We Are Iowa

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Johnson County crews responded to two fires Friday evening due to lightning from a storm—one in the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area burning about 25 acres and another near Half Moon Avenue that was quickly extinguished before reaching homes.  KWWL

CRIME NEWS

  • Iowa City Animal Services is searching for two Pit bull mixes after a dog bite incident on Thursday near Lemme Elementary on Creighton Street—officials say one dog bit a pedestrian and they need to check the dogs for rabies shots.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Iowa City Liberty senior Jack VanScoyoc was named the Press-Citizen's Student of the Week after receiving 62% of the votes when the poll closed on March 13. He maintains a 4.22 GPA while taking six AP courses — he earned the Seal of Biliteracy in French and leads in show choir, sports management and aviation.  Iowa City Press-Citizen
  • University of Iowa will close its Division of Access, Opportunity and Diversity on March 27 after the Board of Regents ordered a review—three employees will move to other parts and one job will be cut while key student programs are reassigned. The change is meant to help the school meet new laws—state and federal rules and accreditation standards.  Iowa City Press-Citizen

  • Veterans and supporters gathered Friday in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids to protest proposed staffing cuts at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Local leaders say job losses have already strained care and worry that additional cuts may further reduce essential services—though officials insist that veterans' benefits will not change.  KWWL
