COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteer coordinator Casey Gaylord was surprised with a $500 award as the first recipient of the monthly Surprise Squad program; he leads 300+ volunteers at the North Liberty Community Pantry that serves 1,400 local families.  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Circus celebrates its 75th anniversary with a weekend performance (details available online). The event invites families to enjoy traditional circus acts in a festive setting.  We Are Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents earning less than $69,000 can get free, in-person tax help at Iowa City Public Library starting Jan. 31, while those making $89,000 or less can file online with IRS-certified volunteers & support for bigger refunds. Appointments will be available for scheduling on Tuesday.  KCRG
  • A Senate subcommittee advanced a bill (SSB 3033) that could close the Iowa City Historical Society, which houses thousands of local artifacts and has been open by appointment since the end of 2025. Advocates have raised concerns over the loss of regional records while a counter proposal seeks to keep the volunteer-led center open.  KCRG
  • Iowa City City Council will suspend Fieldhouse Bar and Grill’s liquor license for two weeks on Tuesday night after officials said the bar violated code by serving alcohol off the ground floor; the bar may appeal the decision to the Iowa Department of Revenue.  KCRG

  • Hannah Stuelke earned AP women's basketball player of the week following strong performances that included 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists in wins at local games against Michigan State and Oregon. Her scoring efforts helped the Hawkeyes remain unbeaten in Big Ten play.  We Are Iowa
